6D Laser was founded by Dr. Stephen Uhlhorn. While working in the laser micromachining industry, Dr. Uhlhorn identified several critical underlying issues - hardware and software - that have adversely impacted the market proliferation of laser micromachining. 6D Laser's goal is simple. We aspire to accelerate market adoption of laser micromachining for our customers through novel method(s) of integrating ultrafast laser processing with precision multi-axis motion systems. Near the end of 2020, 6D Laser was wholly acquired, and is focused on the development of a next generation laser micromachining platform that is not only smaller in size and less costly, but, is significantly easier to use so that highly skilled operators are optional. Since 2018, 6D Laser has established strategic partnerships with Amplitude Laser, SCANLAB, and ACS Motion Control, and has developed several custom turn-key laser micromachining systems for its customers. 6D Laser's central mission addresses limitations of existing laser processing systems which are largely due to sub-optimal positioning systems used by systems integrators. 6D Laser tackles this problem by integrating ultra-fast laser material processing with the 6D nanometer-level precision motion control solutions in which ALIO Industries specializes.
6D Laser vertically integrates all of the sub-systems required for precision laser micro-processing, and it does this by forming strategic partnerships with key component and subsystem suppliers that are required to achieve the goals of demanding precision applications.
Laser Micro-Processing Industry
Unlimited Field-of-View (UFV™) Laser Processing System. UFV™ laser processing systems offer considerable advantages over traditional field-stitching systems by combining the high-speed scanning of galvos with the large field sizes available with motion control stages. This increases processing speed while eliminating errors from field stitching. As a key integrator of the SCANLAB/ACS XLSCAN solution, 6D Laser can provide a fully integrated turn-key system for UFV™ laser processing.
6D Micromachining System with Taper Control. Laser micro-machining of fine features using ablative methods leads to the formation of steep wall-taper angles when drilling or milling deep features (>100 microns). The traditional solution to this problem employs a 5-axis precession scan head, which is very costly. 6D Laser’s alternative approach controls the taper angle by varying the AOI using advanced multi-axis motion systems. Combining high-speed scanning galvos with multi-axis motion control, 6DLaser can take full advantage of the unique processing capabilities of ultrafast lasers, without the need for a costly precession scan head, thereby lowering the barrier to entry for precision laser micromachining.
